Oil Cleansers .. what's all the hype about?

When a new beauty fad comes along, it's natural to question whether there's any weight to the claims being made.  So you can be forgiven for thinking that cleansing your face with oil is just another crazy idea that will be over before you know it .. right?

It couldn't be further from the truth! Cleansing your skin using oils isn't a new idea ... in fact, it's been around for centuries. The Ancient Romans used to clean themselves with olive oil, scraping off the dirt and oil with a curved blade called a strigil, before bathing.  So it’s taken us more than 2 and a ½ thousand years to realise that this society had it right!

Why are you only just hearing about it now? ... Well, today’s wave of Eco-conscious beauty has sparked a surge of interest in cleansing oils because they're all-natural and quite often made from organic ingredients. The botanical oil contents are generally chosen for their small molecular structure which make them able to easily penetrate the skin. They’re rich in healthy skin essentials and moisturising fatty acids, such as omega-3, 6 and 9 which strengthen the skin’s lipid layer and help stabilise natural oil production.

The philosophy of oil cleansers comes from one of the most basic principles of chemistry - “like dissolves like”.  It follows that the best way to dissolve sebaceous oil is by using something similar in composition: other oils. By using the right oils, which are naturally antibacterial,  the skin pores are cleansed of dirt, bacteria and impurities naturally.  Gently and effectively, old and dirty oils are replaced with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals that heal, protect and nourish the skin.  When done properly and consistently, the oil cleansing method can clear the skin from common issues: oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne.

If you're still struggling with the idea of washing your face with oil, you're not alone.  For generations we've been taught to wash our skin with soap and other harsh chemicals to achieve that "squeaky clean" feeling.  However, over washing of the skin is a huge problem, particularly if you have oily skin. You may think that by scrubbing the oil off your face you're cleaning properly but the opposite is actually true.  When scrubbed with chemical packed, emulsifying, foaming cleansers the skin is forced to produce even more oils to compensate, which actually causes the breakouts, acne and dry patches we've all experienced at some point.

This is where our hero, the Oil Cleanser, steps in ...

The most important function of an oil cleanser is to remove impurities without stripping the skin or leaving it feeling dry. After all, dehydrated skin can lead to premature signs of aging and we're all fighting that!  When cleansing oils are massaged into the skin, the ‘good’ oils work to dissolve any ‘bad’ oils that build up on the skin’s surface and cause problems. These oily impurities consist of dirt, grime, makeup and oxidised sebum (which cause blackheads). The oil cleanser binds to these impurities which are then drawn out and washed away with warm water and steam from a hot washcloth. The result ... clean skin that is soft and hydrated with the Natural pH balance restored.

The great news is that the oil cleansing method works for all skin types (even oily skin) and, contrary to popular misconceptions, won’t block pores.  When starting out it's normal to experience an adjustment period of a week or so while the skin detoxes and adjusts.  During this time the skin may seem more oily than usual with a few light breakouts.  For this reason we recommend cleansing with a correctly formulated oil cleanser every second day, gradually building up to every day to allow you and your skin a chance to adapt.

Whether your skin is dry, sensitive or you're currently battling an annoying bout of acne, the oil cleanser is for you! Embrace this time old tradition to heal, protect, firm, soothe and hydrate your skin ...

Introducing Natural Skincare

I often get asked, “Why is natural skin care so important?”

It's a very relevant question to ask, particularly when we're faced with so much advertising from commercial brands with often incorrect information about what is good for your skin and what isn't.

A big part of what I do stems from a passion for cutting through marketing ploys and educating on genuine health and wellness.  The truth of the matter is, what we put onto our skin, we also put into our bodies.  While health conscious individuals are becoming more and more aware of the food they place into our mouths, the same attitude needs to be taken when considering skincare products.  Whether it is lotion, oils, anti-aging serums, an acne regimen or a scrub ... our skin absorbs over 60% of what we put on our skin.  So, when the products we use are made from harmful artificial ingredients these can place an unnecessary burden on the body’s detoxification processes and on the entire immune system, including the skin.  In fact, some chemicals remain stored in the body for several months or even years before they are completely eliminated. Scary right?!

Thankfully, there is an alternative!  Natural skin care products, made from genuinely pure botanical ingredients, not only have the ability to restore skin to good health by healing the skin both inside and outside, but don't cause a harmful, toxic build up of chemicals in your body.  The natural properties of plant oils and extracts work internally to increase collagen production in the skin, decrease the damage caused to skin cells by free radicals’ and even improve oxygen and blood flow.  Perhaps the most wonderful aspect about going ‘green’ with your skin care is the ‘inside-out’ approach to beauty.  Healing of your skin will also occur externally with the skin better protected against environmental elements and you can expect to notice tighter skin, fewer fine lines and wrinkles, and improved elasticity.  All of these elements combined lead to a radiant complexion and youthful appearance that vehemently defies mother nature’s aging process.

Before rushing out to buy the first "natural skincare" range you find though, it's important to consider that the beauty industry is a step ahead when it comes to "green" beauty and some very clever marketing ploys are in place to mislead consumers.  With not all ‘natural’ skin care products created equal,  make sure you can recognize the ingredients in your skin care products as botanical sources and educate yourself on the harmful chemicals often found in skincare products.  Just because a product is marketed as "pure", "natural" or "plant-based"  doesn't mean its free from synthetic chemicals. After all, petroleum-based ingredients come from a source that was once 'natural' and, as any chemist will confirm, that can still be regarded as organic!

So, keep your skincare simple .. avoid excessively long ingredient lists with chemical names you can't pronounce and choose a skincare line that incorporates quality ingredients.  Not only will you need to use less, making is very cost-effective, but you can also eliminate the need for additional products such as a toner, primer or an additional moisturizer to combat secondary dryness brought on by chemical products.  Despite common perceptions, natural products don’t have to come with a steep price and you don't need a ton of steps to achieve beautiful skin!

Our skin is the largest organ of our body, so it’s important to treat it right. For more information about the genuinely pure plant ingredients we use in At One Skincare ... click the ingredients tab below.
